Eggbid.com vs. Eggbid.net...
I just found out about this eggbid.net thing.
My name is Scott and I was a co-owner of eggbid.com with Tim.
Without a long explanation, I broke my back in a work accident, had a bunch of hardware installed, and I'm currently suffering from a neurological disorder called Isaac's Syndrome. That's what happened to my end of eggbid.com, and where I went.
I have no idea what became of Tim, I've tried to contact him numerous times. I can only pray he's not sick or hurt.
I have no idea why he let the site go down.
Back to the eggbid.net thing...
I just called to ask why they thought it was okay to use our name, eggbid. The gentleman who answered the phone hung up on me, then wouldn't answer the phone thereafter.
Here's the thing...
The name Eggbid belongs to Tim and I, it's our intellectual property. Any knucklehead in the world knows they can't just open up a restaurant and call it McDonald's. As a matter of fact, at one time Eggbid was called Eggbay. Tim and I had to changed the name and domain because Ebay's lawyers contacted us. We did it in about ten seconds because I read up and found that Ebay owns the word "bay" as it relates to electronic auctions. Their lawyer was a great guy and gave us plenty of time to change the name and domain, and was a pleasure to talk to. He really helped us a lot.
At any rate, my personal opinion is that I'd not trust anyone who'd steal someone's name with the intent of profitting on someone else's work, then hang up the phone when he's called on it.
If I was the kind of **** that sues people, I'd do it and win. I just don't have the health or resent to bother.
I will mention it to one of our lawyers to see if they're willing to make a stink and shut it down and make things right.
The only reason I called the guy was to ask him to stop using the name that belongs to me. It wouldn't have cost him a dime to fix what he knew better than to do in the first place.
A big reason why Tim and I became disgusted with eggbid is because of the way people treated each other and stole and lied and cheated. It was very disillusioning. Now this.
We truly loved so, so many of our friends at eggbid. There were so many kind, beautiful, wonderful people that were so good to each other. That type of community is what we dreamed of creating. An extension to the hobby we so loved. We always did it for the love, as it certainly wasn't for the money that almost all got put back into serving out the site.
Ultimately, I don't want people to think this new guy who's very name is stolen to represent Tim and I.
I won't abide by that, it's wrong. I hope you'll all help me in getting the word around.
God Bless you and yours!!!
Great to hear from you Scott and I hope you get better. Tim has not answered any of my emails either and do not know what is up with him. I think the word got out on the guy running eggbid.net and very few use it.
That's great to hear, Matt.

Is the original eggbid.com coming back at some point? Is a name still protected when something no longer exists? This is nothing personal, and I understand that there are good people involved, but the fact is, the site was completely neglected for a few years, fell to shambles, and now there seems to be this great desire to protect the name when someone else want to use it. It would have been great to see this kind of passion when it was degrading and needed support before disappearing.
I understand your line of thinking.

Just so you know, I've been trying to get in touch with Tim since before the site went down.
Regardless, this guy has no right to put himself out as us, love us or hate us. We put a good solid 10 years, 24 hours a day building that name. We own it. He doesn't, and he has no right to use it regardless of semantics.
I'll continue to try to get in touch with Tim to see what's up, and do what I can to get it going again. As I mentioned earlier, my health is not what I'd like it to be, but my doctors have me at a point where I can finally do something with it again.
I don't think you read much of the timeline, or maybe you don't understand what's happened, but all my passion since March of 2008 has been devoted to trying to stay alive. I think I placed my priorities in the right place.

I am not accusing you of poor management. If the name is still registered and a come-back is potentially in the works then that is a whole different story. I fully support the protection and enforcement of what is legally yours. I also think it would be nice to see it back in its original (with some improvements) form. If it were only a case of paying respect to a dead entity, then I would still be a bit perplexed. Let me also add that I own my own business that I also have worked incredibly hard for the last 20 years to build it. Like so many others right now it is struggling horribly to stay alive. If it did fail and be a thing of the past I would be disappointed if someone took the name and ran with it, but there would be little stopping them. What I did would be gone and it would take with it what I made it. Whatever the new person did with the name would be their legacy, good or bad. Their choices reflect on their character, not mine. What is right and what is legal are often two different things.

Breeder and I have been keeping TPC going for quite some time now. I clean tons of spam off here every week that never hits the boards and some that does. I have the same fear this site will got the way of eggbid. I do feel the eggbid copycats need to be exposed as the frauds they are. There are several good and reputable auction sites out there now, there is no need to use the shady ones.
I have some good news...
I talked to Tim this morning. He's alive and kicking, but he's got plenty of troubles, as you may have imagined. I'm certain he could use all your thoughts and prayers.
He and I are in agreement about the eggbid.net thing, and I'm going to take care of that.
He's going to transfer the eggbid domain name to me and send our auction software as well. I'm going to do what I can to get things up and running again, as my time and health permits.
He and I are going to remain partners, and hopefully as he gets things sorted out, he'll be able to come back to something he can be proud of.
I'll need lots of prayers and help to get this thing going, and I've got someone in mind to do all the "dirty work".
It's all just a bunch of ideas right now, but with some time, work and lots of blessings, we may be able to make it go again.
Thanks to all of you for your undying support over the years, even though we've failed you so many times. Maybe with some forethought, we can make things work even better this go-around.
No offense taken, jungle.

Money isn't even the issue as far as we're concerned, but it's obviously the intent of eggbid.net's owner. I just have to do a little more digging and I'll know who he is. I think I do already, and I thought he was a good friend of mine.
Time will tell.
I'm glad to hear that it may a reprise after all. I think a bit more restriction and accountability in user abilities would make it better overall. I wish you luck and look forward to seeing the new site.
Eggbid had around 35000 users and one guy to babysit.

It's honestly a nightmare of epic proportions, you have no idea.
I have some new ideas on how to make sure people are who they say they are, and with Paypal's protections, folks can be pretty safe provided they use a little common sense.
I can't imagine having to call and verify every single new registrant, but if that's what it takes, that's what it'll be.
Folks don't realize it costs over $1200 a month just to serve out eggbid, and I'm not sure where that money's gonna come from, but we'll figure something out together.
I hope to make it mostly user moderated, so people can help each other. That seems to work, just like here with Matt and Evy.
There's a lot of ideas in my little head, and a lot of years experience with this stuff, so I think it'll go well. Add to that all the user input and implementation, and I think it can work.
I sure won't be doing this alone. I'll need lots of good people pushing buttons to make it work.
That's to say there's no way I can do this and make it "mine and Tim's". If it's gonna work it has to belong to all of us. We're all going to have to bear the responsibility and expense, because I don't have the desire or finances to do it myself.
We'll get something figured out, I'm sure. I'm also sure it'll be something we can all be proud of. I'm looking forward to making this all go.
Once again, it'll take lots of prayers and patience.
I'll keep everyone on top of what's going on the whole way.
Once I see what we can do, I'll develop a team of folks who can moderate the mess with me. That way I think we can truly keep it a fun, wholesome and decent place full of the best people in the world.
Glad you got to talk to him Scott. I dropped him an email this AM and I hoped he would get in contact with you. Good luck on the venture, we all miss Eggbid, if for nothing else the entertainment value
Good luck with the project, Scott. If you talk to Tim, give him my best wishes, too. I miss hearing from him.
Basically I just deleted my old post because I only read the thread starter and not the string as a whole. Frankly I was not impressed and blasted Scott for what was allowed to happen to eggbid.com. Reading more I now know more, still not happy but Scott did not deserve the blast I posted. Good Luck and I hope you can bring it back to it's former state.

Reason: Flamed without reading all the posts. gd at his worst.
Well, Scott, some where in the past couple of years I sent an email volunteering a helping hand with the site. Like many here have already stated nothing came of it.
The offer is still on the table.
They say change is a good thing but in this case, even though some of the sites are very good, they are not Eggbid.
It has been a long time. 5 jobs, new wife, 2 children and numerous world events since I have used eggbid.com I even remember eggbay and the transition. I never sold on the site but I purchased some exceptional stock from some great folks.
I when looking for the site and came across this thread. I hope Tim and Matt are doing OK. Has there been any progress getting the site back online? I would be happy to help in any way I can.
My post office misses all the chirping boxes
I have read this entire thread.
I feel bad that you have been injured.
I used eggbid.com extensively for sales and purchases.
Was I satisfied with it? NO!
Why? Well, lets see...
We had numerous accusations of non-payment when you folks lost the records. Then, we send you proof of payment from the bank, and you continue to accuse us of nonpayment. Then, when folks bid to purchase but never paid, our account was not credited for nonpayment. Further, I can count the number of responses I received from Eggbid during the 5 years I was on the site. Hardly any got anything resolved ever.
Finally, I contacted the site owners. Left messages ON THEIR TELEPHONES and NEVER received a single response over the last two years. Further, I am not the only one. THE ONLY REASON I USED EGGBID WAS BECAUSE IT HAD TRAFFIC. otherwise, the auction site had poor service, antiquated posting processes, and was relatively undependable.
IS eggbid.net any better? Not really, but for different reasons. Because eggbid was allowed to decay and then fall, there really is no auction site remaining. Several were established and they are basically former eggbid.com patrons trying to maintain a place to sell birds.
You might have had an accident. However, when eggbid.com collapsed, we were not shocked, we were not even mildly surprised. In fact, as I recall, my spouse's response was something like, "Well eggbid finally died."
Seeing that the original post for this was in 2010, and eggbid.com is still not restored, and eggbid.net has not disappeared, it seems apparent to me that the above posts reflect the general business strategy of eggbid.com.....fail to deliver.
Yes eggbid.com is gone. My, my what to do? Ah got it. Use another auction site. Oops see you do. But it seems you are unhappy with it too. Why not start your own auction site ? Can have the best of both worlds then. Run it the way you want to and sell your birds also. Rog
